Pastoral Care
At Bury Church of England High School, pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. Rooted in our Christian values, we believe that every student is uniquely valued and deserves to feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive—both academically and personally.
A Caring Community
We foster a nurturing environment where students are known as individuals. Our dedicated pastoral team works closely with families, staff, and external agencies to ensure that every child receives the care and guidance they need. Whether a student is facing personal challenges, needs help navigating friendships, or simply requires a listening ear, we are here to support them.
Supporting Wellbeing
We are committed to promoting mental health and emotional wellbeing across the school. Through Year group worship, assemblies, tutor time, and our SHINE curriculum, students are encouraged to develop respect, responsibility and resilience.
Our pastoral provision includes:
- Form Tutors who provide daily support and guidance
- Non-teaching Pastoral Leads who oversee the wellbeing of each year group
- Behaviour and Culture Manager who offers bespoke interventions for students who requite support
- Behaviour mentor who offers weekly sessions for students who require support around mental health, behaviour and attendance
- Key Stage Associate Assistant principals who oversee the progress and well-being of their Key stage students
- Safeguarding Team who offer specialist support
- School Chaplaincy which provides spiritual care and opportunities for reflection
Inclusive and Respectful
As a Church of England school, we celebrate diversity and promote respect for all. Our pastoral care reflects our belief in the dignity and worth of every person, regardless of background or belief. We aim to build a community where kindness, compassion, and forgiveness are lived values.
We celebrate the culture and diversity within our school.
Working Together
We believe that pastoral care is most effective when it is a partnership. We work closely with parents and carers to support students through every stage of their school journey. Communication is key, and we encourage families to reach out to us whenever they have concerns or need advice.
Behaviour curriculum
At our school, we believe that positive behaviour underpins a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment. Our Behaviour Curriculum is designed to explicitly teach and model the values, routines, and expectations that help every child thrive both academically and socially.
Through consistent language, clear boundaries, and restorative approaches, we support pupils in developing self-regulation, empathy, and responsibility. Our curriculum is embedded across all aspects of school life and is tailored to meet the needs of our community, ensuring that every child understands not just what is expected, but why it matters.
Below is a document that details the behaviour curriculum for the school year that will be delivered through year group assemblies.
Behaviour interventions
We take a proactive and consistent approach to monitoring behaviour across the school. Behaviour incidents are recorded and reviewed each day by senior leaders and pastoral staff. This allows for strategic plans to be put in place to identify behaviour patterns, track progress over time, and respond swiftly to emerging needs. We pride ourselves in knowing our students well and identifying triggers for negative behaviour in order to put necessary support in place.
Assess, plan, do, review is used to triage support for students within school. Progress is closely monitored to ensure the intervention has a positive impact on the student.
Interventions are tailored to the individual and may include restorative conversations, mentoring, behaviour reports, or referrals to external agencies. Our aim is always to understand the root cause of behaviour and work collaboratively with pupils and families to promote positive change. By combining clear expectations with compassionate support, we help every child to learn from their experiences and make better choices in the future.
Restorative Practice
At Bury Church of England High School, restorative practice is a cornerstone of our behaviour and relationships policy. Rooted in our Christian values of respect, forgiveness, and reconciliation, it enables students to reflect on their actions, repair relationships, and re-engage positively with their learning.
Why Restorative Practice Matters
We believe that behaviour is best addressed through understanding and dialogue. When a student makes a mistake, a restorative conversation helps them:
- Understand the impact of their behaviour
- Take responsibility for their actions
- Rebuild trust with staff and peers
- Identify strategies to improve moving forward
Without this process, unresolved issues can carry into future lessons, affecting both learning and relationships.
Our Approach
Our restorative model is informed by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) behaviour guidance and Tom Sherrington’s WalkThrus. Staff use a structured, evidence-based approach to ensure consistency and impact across the school.
Three Key Principles:
- Establish – Build strong relationships and clear expectations
- Maintain – Use proactive strategies to sustain positive behaviour
- Restore – Address behaviour through meaningful conversations
