Health & Social Care

Departmental Vision

The subject of Health and Social Care engages students in a knowledge rich curriculum, enabling them to achieve future success in the Health and Social Care Sector.  Students will develop a deep understanding of sector specific concepts that will be used in examinations and practical coursework applications.  The aim of the subject is to allow all students to shine as confident individuals who respect others and make a positive contribution to society.  By inspiring our students to value the challenge of work they can achieve their potential, becoming the medical and care professionals of the future.

The curriculum is designed so that pupils have an understanding of the care needs of different people from childhood to older adulthood. It is designed so that pupils progress onto further study in the care sector or have the knowledge and skills needed for employment in a health and social care setting.

Curriculum Design

The Health and Social Care curriculum is based on sector specific knowledge that deepens in complexity of declarative and procedural knowledge through time. The school’s core values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience are at the heart of the curriculum design, ensuring every student can let their light shine.

The curriculum is designed to be knowledge rich and well-sequenced, ensuring new knowledge builds on prior knowledge. The principles of care unit is the fundamental core knowledge that is essential to developing understanding the topics of life stages and public health campaigns. Further core knowledge within the curriculum covers the following topics:

  • The principles of care and the application of rights and values to health and social care settings for the benefit of service users;
  • Supporting individuals through life events by recognising the life stages of growth and development and how their physical, intellectual, emotional and social milestones change throughout life;
  • Developing the communication skills needed to have a successful career in the Health and Social Care sector.

 The Health and Social Care curriculum is case study rich with constant reference to sector specific examples where students must apply their learned knowledge to specific scenarios, allowing individuals to develop the evaluation and decision-making skills needed in their future careers.
