BURY CE HIGH SCHOOL
A Church of England Academy with the vision to empower all students to let their light shine.

History

Departmental Vision

The purpose of the study of history is to develop our students’ sense of identity allowing them to understand how and why society and the wider world has changed over time. The programme of study will mean students see history through the eyes of a variety of different people and will allow them to develop an awareness of the diversity in British, European and Wider World cultures and societies fostering an attitude of inclusion and respect in their everyday lives.

Curriculum Design

The History curriculum has been designed to help students gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world which will help them reflect on contemporary issues. In lessons we aim to inspire students’ curiosity to know more about the past. We aim to equip students to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps students to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. As pupils build up their declarative knowledge of local, national and international historical events and people, they will also develop their use of second order concepts such as cause, change, consequence and significance to enable them to make sense of the importance of those historical events and people. Pupils will gradually develop this use of procedural knowledge so by the end of Key Stage 3, they have become critical thinkers about the past as well as being equipped for the demands of the GCSE specification.
