SHINE Curriculum 2025/2026
Departmental Vision
At Bury Church, our SHINE Curriculum brings together all elements of Personal Development, including PSHE, RSE, Character Education, Enrichment, Social Action, and Careers Education (CEIAG).
It embodies our Christian vision of “Let your light shine", inspiring every student to grow into a respectful, responsible, and resilient individual who contributes positively to their community and society.
By fostering a clear understanding of fundamental British values and equality, we empower students to make informed decisions and take responsible actions in their lives.
The PSHE element of the SHINE curriculum is designed to help students understand themselves as unique individuals in the eyes of God, while celebrating the rich diversity and complexities of the world around them. We encourage students to embrace a positive mindset and strive to be the best versions of themselves as they mature into adulthood. This curriculum engages students in exploring complex and sensitive issues, allowing them to reflect on their own ideas and beliefs, while offering a safe space to express themselves.
The ultimate aim of our PSHCE curriculum is to enable students to shine in all that they do, developing into well-rounded individuals capable of tackling life’s challenges. Through social action and a commitment to excellence, our students are equipped to support others and make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.
Curriculum Design
The curriculum is taught through a spiral model from Year 7 to Year 11, ensuring progression and depth over time. It blends classroom learning, assemblies, form-time experiences, enrichment activities, and social action projects.
The SHINE Curriculum Strands
Our SHINE Curriculum brings together every aspect of Personal Development at Bury Church. Each strand supports pupils to grow into confident, respectful, and resilient individuals, ready to thrive in life beyond school.
- PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)
Our PSHE curriculum equips pupils with essential knowledge and skills to make safe, informed, and responsible choices. It covers topics such as physical and mental health, drugs and alcohol education, online safety, managing risk, financial awareness, and understanding personal identity and responsibility.
- RSE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education)
RSE provides pupils with the knowledge and values needed to form healthy, respectful, and safe relationships. It explores friendship, consent, families, and diversity, while teaching emotional literacy, respect for others, and an understanding of the impact of relationships on wellbeing.
- Character and Values Education
Character Education is at the heart of the SHINE Curriculum, promoting the school’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience. Pupils reflect on their beliefs, develop empathy and integrity, and learn to apply moral principles that shape positive decision-making and personal growth.
- CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance)
Our Careers programme prepares pupils for life beyond Bury Church, supporting them to make aspirational and informed decisions about their future pathways. Pupils experience encounters with employers, colleges, and universities, explore career options across curriculum subjects, and learn about employment rights, skills, and responsibilities.
- Enrichment and Leadership Development
Enrichment provides pupils with opportunities to explore their interests, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and engage with the local community. Each enrichment block combines social action, sport and wellbeing, and pupil choice, giving every pupil a chance to lead, contribute, and “let their light shine.”
- Social Action and Community Engagement (“Action for Change”)
Social action is embedded throughout the SHINE Curriculum, encouraging pupils to take active roles in improving their school, local community, and the wider world. Pupils plan and deliver purposeful projects linked to local and global issues, building empathy, courage, and a sense of responsibility to others.
- Promotion of Fundamental British Values and Citizenship
Through curriculum experiences, assemblies, and discussion, pupils learn about democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Pupils explore political systems, equality, human rights, and active citizenship—preparing them to participate positively in modern Britain.
- Behaviour and Inclusion Curriculum
Our Behaviour and Inclusion Curriculum reinforces SHINE values through restorative practice, reflection, and positive relationships. It supports pupils to make responsible choices, learn from mistakes, and develop self-regulation. Every pupil is encouraged to take ownership of their behaviour and to contribute to an inclusive, respectful school community.
